Alongside our core programmes, our Access and Success Projects teams collaborate with other organisations to provide both small and large scale bespoke projects to support their priorities.

Access Projects

Each of our bespoke access projects is specific to the needs of the partner and builds on our experience of working with the PhD community to develop key academic skills and self-efficacy to support students accessing university.

We partner with organisations to support university access in the following three ways:

  • Delivering a programme: We can bring our expertise and tutor network to design and deliver bespoke programmes. We’ve recently worked with partners to deliver departmental summer schools, tailored versions of our Scholars Programme, and programmes designed to meet the needs of a particular target group like female/non-binary pupils interested in Computer Science pathways or Children on a Child Protection Plan.
  • Delivering workshops/masterclasses: We have significant experience designing one-off or short introduction or skills-based programmes. Recent examples include 2-day workshops for school students developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, training sessions for university students to develop their teaching practice, and a series of academic skills workshops for students from schooling contexts outside of the UK.
  • Resources and programme design: We also work with partners to bring their disciplinary areas to life for pupils on The Scholars Programme. As part of our pre-designed course offer, we’ve recently designed courses focused on Introductory Philosophy and Digital Literacy.  These courses are a great way for a broad range of young people to be exposed to the most up-to-date disciplinary knowledge and skills. Similarly, we can support PhD researchers to design their own courses based on a particular priority disciplinary area.

Partner organisations range from universities to multi-academy trusts to other education or social mobility organisations.

Make your Mark

Make your Mark has been created to boost attainment for less advantaged students.

The programme was developed using research evidence and school leader insights, and drew on our three years of experience  as an official tuition partner of the National Tutoring Programme.

Make your Mark aims to boost the attainment of Year 10 students, via 12 hours of small group tutoring. Tutorials focus on the English or maths curriculum and embed study strategies throughout. Our tutors are current undergraduate and PhD students from our partner universities who have undergone rigorous assessment and undertaken our high-quality training.

Success 

Our student success work focuses on developing students’ academic self-efficacy and sense of belonging through partnerships with schools, universities and academics. We do this through:

  • Transition programmes that support students as they move from school or college into university, like our success programme, Join the Dots
  • Inclusive teaching and learning practice training to share our expertise in training PhD researchers in effective teaching techniques with university teaching staff and undergraduate students.
