Our Bespoke Projects team works with a number of universities and organisations to provide fully funded opportunities for students in Key Stage 5.

Computer Science Scholars

Computer Science Scholars is our exciting new project in partnership with The Hg Foundation, to support female and non-binary sixth form students to pursue Computer Science degrees. Between 2025 and 2028, the programme will support over 500 female/non-binary students.

The Computer Science Scholars programme provides specialised interventions to Year 12 and 13 students studying A Level Mathematics with an interest in Computer Science. The programme is fully-funded by the Hg Foundation, with no cost to schools. It provides participants with the opportunity to explore advanced Computer Science concepts beyond the school curriculum, supported by their PhD tutors, developing their academic skills and academic self-efficacy.

How does the programme work?

We are launching the Year 13 phase of the programme in September 2026, which is open to female and non-binary Year 13 students who are interested in applying to study a Computer Science degree at university.

The programme will guide students through their university applications in Year 13 and then provide academic mentoring to support participants who are looking to pursue Computer Science degrees; this will be tailored to students’ individual needs and challenges to ensure that they thrive on their degree courses both academically and socially.

Programme overview (October 2026 – April 2027, all online):

  • University application support: two small-group sessions led by a PhD tutor, focused on the Computer Science application process. Students will receive tailored advice on choosing courses, writing personal statements, and navigating university applications
  • Academic mentoring: eight small-group sessions with a PhD tutor, focused on developing the Maths knowledge and skills needed for Computer Science at university
  • Sessions will run 1–2 times per month, usually after school.

Eligibility criteria

Students must:

  • Be in Year 13 in September 2026
  • Attend a non-selective state school
  • Identify as female or non-binary
  • Be studying A Level Maths
  • Be interested in studying Computer Science at university

Students can apply for a place on the programme by completing the application form by 15th July 2026.

The Turing Careers Experience

The Turing Careers Experience is a funded two-day Data Science and Artificial Intelligence event for Year 12/S5 students in October 2026. The Turing Careers Experience is run by the Alan Turing Institute in partnership with the UK’s intelligence agencies – MI5, GCHQ, SIS MI6 and the Ministry of Defence (the Defence AI Centre and DSTL) – and supported by The Brilliant Club.

Through an exciting programme of practical learning, activities and challenges, participants will get hands-on experience supported by experts in the field and be introduced to the huge range of study and career options in Data Science and AI, including in the intelligence agencies and in defence.

This programme is fully funded with free breakfast and lunch. Support with travel expenses will be provided.

Participants will:

  • Work on solving problems with other like-minded young people with practical hands-on application of learnt skills
  • Find out about the wide range of career paths in the sector, including in the intelligence agencies and defence
  • Learn more about current topics in the sector such as ethics and biases
  • Get support with thinking about future study and work opportunities and how to talk about the experience on a personal statement or job application.

To be eligible, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be able to commute into central Cardiff or Glasgow for 2 days during the October half-term holidays*
  • Be in Year 12/ S5 in October 2026
  • Cardiff: Have or be predicted 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (one of which must be Maths at 5 or above) and intending to study at least 1 STEM A Level**
  • Glasgow: Have or be predicted 5 National 5s at grade C or above, one of which must be Maths at grade B or above, and intending to study at least 1 STEM Higher**

*Please note that you should live within approximately one hour’s journey (via public transport) of your chosen location. Reasonable travel costs are provided to all successful candidates but please ensure it is practical for you to travel to your chosen location before you apply.

**STEM A Levels/ Highers include Biology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, ICT/IT

As this programme aims to support students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in Data Science and AI, we strongly encourage applications from students who match one or more of the following criteria:

  • Live in an area with a low WIMD or SIMD score. These scores measures the proportion of the population in an area experiencing deprivation relating to low income
  • Are eligible for free school meals or have been within the past six years
  • Come from a household where one, or both, parent(s) have not completed an undergraduate degree.

We particularly encourage applications from female students, though the opportunity is open to students of all genders.
