Current undergraduate at the University of Sussex? Passionate about academic equality and access to education? We want to hear from you!

The Pilot

A partnership between The Brilliant Club and the University of Sussex, Make your Mark is currently a pilot programme that will be running for the first time in January 2023. We’re looking to recruit around 20 tutors initially, with plans to expand in the future. So if you’re interested we’d encourage you to apply ASAP.

As a pilot tutor you’ll have the opportunity to not only make a difference to the education of local school pupils, but also give feedback that will shape the programme going forward.

Make your Mark

The Make your Mark programme has been created to boost attainment for less advantaged pupils at schools in the Sussex area, by combining curriculum content in Maths or English with effective academic study strategies. Students from less advantaged backgrounds are around 18 months behind their more advantaged peers by the time they take their GCSEs. We want to do something about that. If you’re a current undergraduate at the University of Sussex, you’re passionate about academic equality and access to education, and you’re studying a subject related to Maths or English, we want to hear from you!

Make your Mark is targeted at Year 10 students because GCSE attainment is an important indicator of future participation in HE. Students will take part in twelve 1-hour tutorials delivered by a trained undergraduate tutor in small groups. These predesigned tutorials will be focused on English or Maths curriculum and will explicitly focus on teaching students study strategies, which have been shown to improve academic achievement. These strategies have also been shown to have proven impact on attainment in other subjects.

The first pilot is launching in January 2023 on the South Coast and places on the programme are part-funded by the University of Sussex. Pilot schools and tutors will play a key role in shaping what the programme could look like in future years. The Brilliant Club will evaluate the pilot in 2023 to inform how the programme can be expanded in its second year.

  • You’ll teach predesigned modules that combine curriculum content in English or Maths with effective study strategies
  • There will be 12 x 1 hour tutorials delivered in Spring 2023. At least 4 tutorials will be delivered in person at a local schools and the remaining will be delivered online
  • You’ll be teaching Year 10 pupils in small groups of 5

What we’re looking for:

  • Current undergraduate students at the University of Sussex
  • Students studying a course relevant to Maths or English, or holding an A level or equivalent in either subject
  • Students passionate about access to education for pupils of all backgrounds
