Researchers in Schools

Our RIS Schools provide an opportunity to train and employ subject experts in secondary school EBacc subject areas.

The Programme

Researchers in Schools (RIS) recruits PhD graduates and places them as trainee teachers in schools.

We support them to develop as excellent teachers and research leaders committed to closing the gap in attainment and university access through the three RIS aims:

  • Championing university access
  • Increasing subject expertise
  • Promoting education research

The programme is a two-year undertaking. Over the course of the programme, participants complete the Research Leader in Education (RLE) Award, designed to ensure that participants are well equipped to deploy their knowledge and skills for the benefit of pupils and schools.

RIS delivers the Department for Education’s Maths and Physics Chairs Programme, attracting talented Maths and Physics subject experts into secondary school teaching.

Oliver has gone far above and beyond expectations for an NQT. He is, and will continue to be, a real asset to our maths department and our school.

Impact

RIS participants are making an impact in their schools.

In both years of the programme, participants deliver an activity specifically designed to combine their expertise and an area of school need.

In 2018/19 activities included talks by scientists at universities and in industry, astrophysics enrichment lessons, robotics and programming clubs, and national competitions such as FameLab and UKMT challenges.

Alex’s commitment to delivering a high quality education and engendering a love of his subject in his students is unwavering. He has been a huge asset to Essa Academy, both in the classroom, and in his willingness to involve himself in the wider life of the school.

RIS Training and Support

Participants undertake a two-week Summer Training induction, as well as weekend development days.

This training is facilitated by the experienced staff at The Brilliant Club with expert education and widening participation speakers.

Participants are supported throughout the programme by a dedicated RIS Programme Officer who provides one-to-one mentoring and coaching.
