Charity partners with Oak National Academy

21 May 2020

The Brilliant Club has joined forces with Oak National Academy to provide fun and educational activities for children to enjoy during half-term. The new Oak Activity Club will comprise of a range of engaging resources for pupils to enjoy, either alone or with their families, with new activities from a range of partners added every day.

Since schools were closed at the end of March, The Brilliant Club has been releasing its own range of free-to-access online resources suitable for pupils age 10-18. The sessions include masterclasses produced by subject experts (titles include ‘Glow in the dark drugs’ and ‘Why didn’t medieval women take selfies?’), study skills and university information, advice and guidance. The PhD tutors who have designed the masterclasses would normally be delivering university-style tutorials in schools as part of the charity’s award-winning Scholars Programme.

The core themes of the resources, which reflect the charity’s mission of increasing the number of pupils from underrepresented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities, will underpin the new sessions provided for the Oak Activity Club.

Oak National Academy is a collection of high-quality lessons and online resources. Backed by the Government, it was created a month ago in response to the coronavirus lockdown and provides a plan of video lessons and learning materials for teachers, as well as parents and their children.

David Jones, Education and Development Director at The Brilliant Club, said:

“We are delighted to be contributing to the Oak Activity Club and are excited to share our resources with pupils. They have been designed with researchers to introduce both primary and secondary pupils to university skills and university-style learning through academic content that would not usually be found in the curriculum.”

Anne-Marie Canning, CEO of The Brilliant Club, said:

“The speed at which schools and the rest of the education sector have moved to produce online resources has been remarkable. The Brilliant Club is pleased to play our part and provide sessions to help pupils across the country explore university level study and the world of higher education. It’s important that we support young people to think about their educational futures at this moment in time.’

Matt Hood, Principal of Oak National Academy and Trustee of The Brilliant Club, said:

“When we set up Oak we wanted to offer as comprehensive a set of subjects as possible.

“But we also want to make sure we are providing for children and families during half-term. The range of activities are brilliant and will mean they can enjoy their week off – the activities are fun, will keep children busy and will provide structure.

“We are very grateful to all our partners for joining us to provide these activities, which we hope will be useful and enjoyed by millions of people up and down the country.”
